Edit Label Style Defaults

Autodesk Civil 3D Tips and Techniques

Civil 3D provides a hierarchical sequence of controls to set the default parameters of objects and labels within a drawing.  This discussion will focus on Label Style Defaults.

DRAWING LEVEL

  • Starting at the top level, you can control all label styles within the drawing and establish behaviors of all labels like Arrow Head Type, Arrow Head Size, Text size, border, broder masking, etc.
  • Navigation:  Tool Space> Active Drawing Settings View>Right click on the Drawing Name>Select "Edit Label Style Defaults"
  • Major properties are listed on the left in hierarchical order and when expanded, allow you to preset the default behavior of all labels.
  • Example:
    • Expand Leader >
    • Select Arrow Head Size
    • Type in the size for the Arrow Head (.12)
  • Lock----When you click on the padlock and it closes, this provides immediate changes to all labels currently in the drawing
  • Child Override----Click on the down arrow to place an "X" in this cell to disable the Child Override. All label settings throughout the drawing will be disabled in favor of this setting (This means you will be unable to edit this in a lower level to make a change)

OBJECT TYPE LEVEL

  • Object types include:
    • Point
    • Surface
    • Alignment
    • Profile
    • Profile View
    • Parcel
    • Pipe
    • Structure
    • Sample Line
    • Section
    • Section View
  • Navigation: Tool Space > Active Drawing Settings View > Right Click on the name of the object type listed above > Select "Edit Label Style Defaults"
  • The appearance of this dialog box is exactly like the Drawing Level dialog box.
  • Follow instructions above to make settings for all labels of this object type.
  • Example: Pipe
    • Expand Leader >
    • Select Arrow Head Size
    • Type in the size for the Arrow Head (.15)
  • Child Override
    • If you have disabled the child override at the drawing level, you will be unable to edit that particular parameter at this (or lower) level.
    • If you have not disabled the child override at a higher level, all labels of this type will behave as you have preset them here when you click on the down arrow and place an 'X' in that cell.(see Child Override at Drawing Level)
  • You can make special label styles for each of the object types and when you insert a label of that particular object type those labels will appear and behave alike.
  • If you click on the padlock and close it, then your edit will apply to all labels currently in the drawing of that object type.

LABEL STYLE LEVEL

  • Label Styles occur beneath each of the Object Types within the hierarchy, and sometimes two levels below
  • Example: Alignment
    • Label Styles
      • Station
        • Major Station
        • Minor Station
        • Geometry Point
        • Profile Geometry Point
        • Station Equation
        • Design Speed
  • Navigation: Tool Space > Active Drawing Settings View > Object Type > Lable Styles >>>Label Style Name
  • Right click on the label style name and select "Edit Label Style Defaults"
  • You can create new labels by name within this label style and they will already have the preset defaults you have established at the Label Style Level
  • Child Override
    • If you have disabled the child override at the drawing level (or Object type level), you will be unable to edit that particular parameter at this (or lower) level.
    • If you have not disabled the child override at a higher level, all labels of this type will behave as you have preset them here when you click on the down arrow and place an 'X' in the cell.(see Child Override at Drawing Level)

LABEL LEVEL

  • When you right click on a particular Label by name, you get a dialog box which appears much like the Label Style dialog box.  Here you can customize a label's appearance and behavior, including layer, color, linetype, text style, text height, (This topic is an entire discussion all its own)
  • Child Override---If you have disabled the child override at the drawing level (or Object type level or Label Style Level), you will be unable to edit that particular parameter here at the Label level
