FOUR OPTIONS FOR COMPANY-WIDE STANDARDIZATION

Design aids for CAD work tend to evolve and become obsolete over time.  Autodesk provides three competing ways to centrally manage these design aids for distribution to each workstation.  Eagle Point also provides a software package which has merit in this discussion.  After reviewing the benefits and disadvantages of each system, which would you suggest for implementation by Civil Design Concepts?
  1. Design Center
    1. Advantages
      1. This management tool provides customized organization of hatches line styles drawings, etc
      2. One-click creation of Tool Palette from all blocks within a single dwg.
      3. Update blocks in source drawing and the next time it creates a tool palette, the tools will update.
    2. Disadvantages
      1. Search is much like Explorer
      2. Cannot create hierarchy of categories
      3. Cannot use tools in design center directly
  2. Tool Palette Collection
    1. Advantages
      1. Easy importing Company tool palette group into workstation
      2. Easy switching between tool palette groups
      3. No need to create new tool palette to get the latest version
      4. Easy to organize and arrange your own tool palettes
      5. Easy to transfer content from tool palette to drawing
    2. Disadvantages
      1. No Hierarchy of organization
      2. No Search capability
      3. No central location for updating information
  3. Content Browser
    1. Advantages
      1. Tool Palettes become individual again--When a user wants to delete a tool or even a tool palette, it does not disturb other users
      2. Hierarchy of organization
      3. One-click creation of tool palette
      4. Advanced search capability
    2. Disadvantages
      1. Each workstation must insert the Network Library
      2. Still not sure about linestyles, dimstyles, hatch settings, font settings, etc as compared to Design Center.  It seems that Design Center has better control here.
  4. Eagle Point-Task Navigator for Civil3D---This is entirely different than the above three systems.  It is based on third party software and provides many more managerial features.http://www.eaglepoint.com/solutions/workflow/process/default.asp#TaskNavigatorCivil3D
    1. Advantages
      1. Work Flow and training instructions for each task
      2. New Employees can become productive in less time
      3. Tools and links embedded in hierarchical system for easy access at just the right time to use them
      4. Central update of Task Navigator database including instructions and links
      5. Works inside Civil 3D
    2. Disadvantages
      1. Additional cost for software and installation
      2. Cost to develop and maintain the task instructions, tools and links
